Avon grants $300 thousand for construction of shelter for the American Society of Cancer

The initiative is part of the Avon Crusade against breast cancer.

San Juan – As part of the annual Breast Cancer Crusade, Avon Company, donated the first share of $100 thousand -of a grand total of $300 thousand- for the construction of the Cancer Patients Lodge of the American Cancer Society of Puerto Rico.

The structure, a building of 34 rooms and 19 parking lots, will be a temporary shelter free of cost for cancer patients who don’t live in the metropolitan area and are outpatients of San Juan. The project will be located in Alberio Street, Sargento Medina corner in Hato Rey, close to the principal cancer treatment centers. The building, which is to be finished by February 2009, will have the Avon Logo in the facade.

“We compromise with this important contribution and with it the benefits that they represent to those cancer patients who live outside the San Juan area and don’t have a safe, pleasant and comfortable place to be when they come from various municipalities across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, to receive their outpatient treatments”, said José Quiñones, General Manager of Avon Puerto Rico & the Caribbean.

Since 2000, Avon initiated the Breast Cancer Crusade, with the motive of educate and promote early detection of these disease. Every year, during the moths of September and October, the company launches in their sales brochure several commemorative products for recollecting funds for the Breast Cancer Crusade.

Avon Puerto Rico also donated to American Cancer Society a total of $16,550 product of the sponsorship of the tri-athlete Suzana Degazon. For each mile that Suzana Degazon runs in her international competitions, Avon Puerto Rico donates $7.00 to support free mammograms program of the American Cancer Society. Since 2006, Avon Puerto Rico has donated a total of $44,256 from the effort of Degazon.

American Cancer Society received the donation during a special event that the company dedicated to the Avon Sales Representatives who are survivors of breast cancer. A total of 150 persons attended to this event.

Local actress and comedian Katy Franco, who survive breast cancer, presented her stand up comedy named “Sacando Pecho”.

About the Lodge
